Grenada Information

Stunning Grenada

The island of Grenada, known as the "Spice Isle", is an aromatic jewel in the South Caribbean Sea. It includes a small group of islands known as the Grenadines, made up of Carriacou and Petite Martinique among others. An agricultural eden, this island is famous for the cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg it produces.

Grenada was colonized in 1498 when Christopher Columbus stepped upon its sandy beaches. Since that time the island has changed hands often, spending time under Spanish and British rule, until it was finally settled by the French in the 17th Century. It found its way back to the British in 1763 and is now considered to be a parliamentary democracy under the Crown.

The island today is divided into six parishes, and its capital is St. Georges in the southwest corner of the country. Most of the tourist areas are located in this lovely harbor area which boasts magnificent beaches and deluxe hotels. The Spice Island Beach Resort and Laluna Resort both receive high accolades from tourists. Fishing, sailing, hiking and mountain biking are all readily available in this area. Ecotourism ventures are starting to grow in Grenada and can currently be experienced in the parishes of St. David and St. John.

If you are interested in learning about the abundance of spices that are grown here, then you would do well to visit Grenville, the island's second largest city. It is here that the largest nutmeg processing plant is found and a very informative afternoon can be spent here.

However, if you are looking for fun and entertainment, then head over to Gouyave in St. John's Parish. This town, named after the abundance of guava trees, is the social capital of Grenada. There is no end to the parties, dances, carnivals and festivals held here year round.

There is a great dining to be found throughout the island chain. The cuisine here is influenced by the abundance of spices grown here, as well as the Creole, Caribbean and West Indian cooking traditions.

In a turquoise sea of islands, Grenada stands out as an incomparable gem.
