Tobago Information

Tropical Tobago

Tobago, the smaller of two islands making up the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is an unspoiled paradise in the southern Caribbean Sea. Believed by some to be the last "undiscovered" island in this part of the world, it is the perfect destination for anyone wanting to get away from it all.

Tobago was first settled by Holland in 1654 and changed hands 22 times until it was finally given to the United Kingdom in 1814. In 1976 it became a Republic and remains one to date. The small island, population 55,000, is divided into seven parishes, with its capital being Scarborough.

Due to its hilly topography, perfect beaches and tropical climate, Tobago is becoming more and more of a tourist spot. Mountain biking, scuba diving, snorkeling, birdwatching and ecotourism are all major draws. The Tobago Forest Reserve, designated in 1776, is the oldest protected forest in the western world. Any number of exotic birds, mammals and reptiles (non-poisonous) live within this rainforest. On Little Tobago, a small island off the northeastern tip of Tobago, is a large area of dry forest with more indigenous animals and seabird nesting sites.

Scuba diving and snorkeling are both popular here, as it is the southernmost island in the Caribbean where it is recommended. Large coral communities thrive here and Speyside is particulary popular for its large population of tropical fish, turtles, sharks and rays that have taken up residence in the old Maverick Ferry. If lying on a fine sand beach is more to your liking, then Castara, Bloody Bay or Englishman's Bay should be your destination.

Most of the resort hotels are centered around the southwest part of the island. Crown Point, Store Bay, Pigeon Point and Buccoo Reef all offer deluxe accomodations. Plantation Beach Villas above Stonehaven Bay, is a three-star, intimate resort with lovely beachfront cottages. Coco Reef Resort in Scarborough likewise has an idyllic setting on a turquoise lagoon.

If getting away to an unspoiled Caribbean paradise is your dream, then look no further than Tobago. But hurry up and get here before the word gets out!
